The official iPhone 6S price will be announced on Wednesday, and we'll know how much the iPhone 6S Plus will cost on September 9, too.
Right now, it's good news, according to the latest price rumors. While Apple is updating its phones with new specs, the company will likely charge the same of money as past years.
This is, after all, an "S" upgrade, with the iPhone 7 due in 2016. That doesn't mean the feature improvements will be less dramatic. But it should keep the new iPhone from a price hike.
Here's everything we know so far about the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S price, leading up to Apple's San Francisco press conference on Wednesday morning.
How much will iPhone 6S cost?
The size of the iPhone 6S isn't going to change, from every early leak that we've seen but one. That's consistent with Apple's unofficial "every two years" policy of changing up the design.
The next iPhone with a 4.7-inch display may have the same dimensions, and it'll likely have the same unlocked price across the board $649 in the US, £539 in the UK and AU$99 in Australia.
That's for the 16GB model, and it's been like that for some time. Yes, speculation is that Apple is sticking with the low internal storage size as its entry-level iPhone model.
From there it'll likely increase in price. The iPhone 6S 64GB will be $749, £619 and AU$1,149 and the iPhone 6S 128GB will be $849, £699 and $1,299, if Apple sticks to its history.
The US iPhone 6S price needs a special note. American carriers Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have done away with two-year contracts through its stores, and AT&T wants to do the same. Oddly, through Apple's stores, the opposite is true. AT&T no longer offers contracts, but three three other carriers do.
Instead of locking-in consumer for 24 months in exchange for a $199 subsidized iPhone and higher monthly plans, the networks are spreading out the cost of phones with device payment plans. This makes it easier to understand your bill and upgrade to a new device, though right now it's all a bit confusing.
It's going to be interesting because, year after year, the new iPhone price as been introduced on stage as "starting at $199" in giant letters. Will that change, or will Apple just cite the one of the lingering two-year contract plans? We'll know Wednesday.
How much will iPhone 6S Plus cost?
The iPhone 6S Plus price is likely to follow the same pattern, costing more than the iPhone 6S, but not actually serving consumers a price hike over last year's iPhone 6 Plus.
Rumored to have the same 5.5-inch phablet-sized display, the iPhone 6S Plus is likely to cost $749 in the US, £619 in the UK and AU$1,149 in Australia for 16GB.
Upping the internal storage to 64GB would mean it'd cost $849, £699 $AU$1,299, or for 128GB it'd cost the highest price of an iPhone, $949, £789 and AU$1,449.
Again, the iPhone 6S Plus in the US may or may not be subsidized with a two-year contract this time around, which would have taken the upfront price down to $299 for the 16GB model.
When do iPhone 6S pre-orders start?
iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus pre-orders will start on Friday, September 11, if Apple sticks to the same calendar as last year. That's the Friday right after it announces the new phones.
Unlike with the Apple Watch, the company is expected to allow fans to line up outside of its stores, but strongly encourage online pre-orders or in-store pickup options instead.
That official launch date would be Friday, September 18, again, if everything works the same way it did last year. Expected lines for walk-ins to be hours long, before stores even open.
In addition to Apple Stores, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will be sold in carrier stores and "select Apple Authorized Resellers" like Best Buy, Target and Walmart.
Can you buy iPhone 6S unlocked?
Yes and no. An unlocked iPhone 6S will be available through the Apple Store in the UK right away and everywhere else eventually, butthe US version at least never has a SIM-free new iPhone available at launch.
That makes it problematic for US buyers who want to take an unlocked iPhone 6S to another carrier or go globetrotting by using their new phone overseas on a foreign network.
Apple started offering an unlocked iPhone 6 at the top of this year, so it took three and a half months to roll out the a SIM-free iPhone.
Your best bet may be to buy the iPhone 6S at full retail price through one carrier and wait out the 40 or so days (different for each carrier) required before they unlock your phone.
The final countdown is on for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. The price is more convoluted than ever in the US, but it's clear that neither a real price hike or price drop is expected. We'll know for sure on Wednesday, September 9 when we cover it live and in person.
