O2 reveals UK 5G test

O2 has announced plans to show off its 5G work for the first time.

The operator has revealed it will be launched a 5G test bed at the O2 in London's North Greenwich where members of the public will be able to experience the benefits of superfast next-generation networks.

Launching in the second half of the year, the test network will deliver next-generation speeds and connectivity to O2 customers visiting the venue, which is has seen 70 million visitors in its ten-year lifespan.

O2 will initially be hosting a number of customer demos aimed at showing off the potential of next-generation networks, before launching the 5G experience for its customers later this year.

The test bed will be delivered using O2's Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) configured for virtualisation of core 5G network technologies.

O2 is hoping that the deployment will help it to live-test a variety of equipment and potential use cases for 5G, allowing the firm to gain real-time feedback from customers and partners alike.

The new network will initially only be available within certain areas of the O2 to begin with, including the VIP blueroom and the venue's O2 store, with the company hoping to roll it out across the whole site by the end of 2020.

“The arrival of 5G technology, and the range of unprecedented benefits it will bring, will play a key role in keeping our society and the British economy moving for years to come," said Mark Evans, CEO of O2.

"That’s why we are delighted to announce our plans to launch a 5G test bed at The O2 later this year. At O2, we are obsessive about always delivering for our customers, and this test bed is a further example of our pioneering attitude to putting our customers first and and backing the importance of mobile for Britain’s future.”
